Backpack: slots, sprint and the key-item rule

A moving tool, not a second inventory. The nine slots are real; so is the sprint penalty.

Short answer

The backpack adds carrying capacity — a public review says +9 slots — but removes your sprint. It was designed mainly for moving camp, not for daily exploration. Keep key items out of it, and update to patch 1.0.47.0 for the reported item-loss fixes.

What the backpack is for

The developer's Dev Blog #10 is unusually direct: the backpack was designed more as a way to pack up your belongings and move camp to another campsite than as something you carry on every expedition. That reframes the item. It is a logistics tool, not a second inventory.

A public review adds the trade-off: the backpack gives nine additional slots at the cost of removing your ability to sprint. Nine slots are valuable when you are relocating a camp; they are a liability when you are dodging a boss.

Key items stay out

Public reviews warn that key items such as the prison key and silver dagger can be lost if a backpack bug triggers. Patch 1.0.47.0 fixes several loss paths, including backpacks and death packs sinking in water and contents swapping or duplicating. The safe habit remains: put quest items in your normal inventory, not the bag you drop on death.

Do this even after the patch

Keep irreplaceable key items out of the backpack. The patch fixes reported loss paths; it does not make the backpack a safer place for quest items than your pockets.

Backpack habits

  • Do not give every co-op player a backpack. One camp-mover is enough; three players without sprint is a bad fight.
  • Empty it before a boss. The slots are not worth the escape speed.
  • Check the death pack. The patch changed how packs behave in water; recovery still matters.
  • Use the camp stash for materials. The backpack is for moving, not for permanent storage.

What we do not know yet

We have not verified the exact recipe, whether the backpack can be upgraded, or whether the sprint penalty changes with later patches. The in-game item text is the source of truth. Send a screenshot from patch 1.0.47.0 through the correction page if you have one.
