Pickaxe: the early progression tool
The tool that turns survival into progression — and the one that teaches you not every pile is clay.
The pickaxe is the early progression tool. It is reported to mine clay and goo, which expand your base and upgrade your arsenal. It does not work on stone piles, according to a public review. Find or craft it before you plan a long clay run.
Why the pickaxe matters
Before the pickaxe, the game is mostly survival: gather food, light a torch, avoid fights, return to camp. After the pickaxe, it becomes a progression game: clay funds camp expansion and arsenal upgrades, which in turn let you survive longer routes. A public review describes exactly this shift.
Where to get it
We have not verified a single fixed location. The practical route is to explore the shallow areas first, check rooms you passed before you had a light source, and sweep branches with a co-op partner. Do not drop or sell a tool you do not recognize before testing it on a material pile.
The pickaxe-clay loop and the stone-pile exception come from public Steam reviews. The exact acquisition route is not verified; we do not publish a fake coordinate.
What it unlocks
| Target | Does the pickaxe work? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Clay / goo piles | Yes (community-reported) | Carry clay back to camp for base and arsenal upgrades |
| Stone piles | No (community-reported) | Try another tool or return later; the correct tool is unverified |
| Metal bars | No | A hammer is the reported tool |
Pickaxe habits that save runs
- Bring it on clay runs, leave spare tools at camp. A full pack with no clay is a wasted trip.
- Test the pile before you commit. If it does not react, do not stand there swinging.
- Keep one empty slot. Clay needs somewhere to go.
- Do not put key items in the backpack. The pickaxe is a tool; a prison key is not.
What we do not know yet
We have not verified the exact recipe, material cost or whether the pickaxe can be upgraded. The in-game crafting menu is the source of truth. If you have a screenshot from patch 1.0.47.0, send it through the correction page.
