Backpack despawn & lost packs
Update to 1.0.47.0 first. Then check the shoreline, the death location and the session state.
Short answer
Public reviews from the launch build reported backpacks and death packs sinking or losing items, especially around water. Patch 1.0.47.0 changes this: backpacks and death packs now wash ashore instead of sinking. If you are still losing packs, update first, then follow the recovery checklist.
What was reported
- Backpacks and death packs sinking out of sight when they ended up in water.
- Backpack contents swapping or duplicating after switching backpacks.
- Items lost when adding to partial stacks.
- Key items disappearing with the pack, causing a soft-lock.
These are public review reports from the launch build, not a complete bug list.
What patch 1.0.47.0 changed
- Backpacks and death packs wash ashore like items instead of sinking.
- Backpack contents should no longer swap or duplicate after switching.
- Items should no longer be lost when adding to partial stacks.
- Deconstructed items no longer fall through the floor; refunds drop like container contents.
Update before troubleshooting
Most of these reports predate 1.0.47.0. If you are on the launch build, update first; otherwise you may be debugging a bug that is already fixed.
If a pack is missing
- Check the water. After the patch, packs should wash ashore; scan the shoreline.
- Check your last death location. The death pack may be where you died, not where you respawned.
- Reload the session. Some co-op state bugs clear on reload.
- Do not put key items in the backpack. Prevention is still the best fix.
- Report the exact steps. Include patch number, solo/co-op, host status and whether water was involved.
